School Starts September 3rd, Welcome Back!

Welcome to the new school year at Earl Haig Public School!  Please find a message from our principal, Olga Ellis, regarding the start of the year!

Just a reminder that the Earl Haig School Council is having a ‘Welcome Back’ Coffee & Cookie Drop-In in the school yard this Friday, September 6th from 8:30am-9:30am. And the first Earl Haig School Council Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 17th at 7:00pm in the school library.

Dear Earl Haig PS Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back to our Earl Haig families and a warm welcome to the new families joining us.  Our staff and caretakers have been busily preparing our school and classrooms in anticipation of the 2013-2014 school year.  We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child’s learning journey.   Our staff will be out to welcome you on the school yard with their class lists at 8:55 am for entry.  If it is raining, Gr.1-8 students will be invited down to the lunchroom.  Students would have had their classroom numbers appear on their June report.   Yard supervision begins at 8:40 am for Grades 1-8.

Please have your child bring their own lunch, drinks (water bottle) and snacks to school for the first week.  We are an Eco school that encourages Litterless Lunches.  We also have students with serious Anaphylactic allergies to nuts and nut products.  Please assist us in helping to keep our school nut free.  Our lunchroom program (Gr.1-8) and K snack program will commence on Monday September 9, 2013 for those families that are interested.

Kindergarten Families: Our Kindergarten team will be out to meet you and your child at 8:55am on the north west end of the school. In the case of rain, families may come in the front doors at 8:55am and gather outside the K classes at that time. A reminder that parents are required to supervise their K children until entry pick-up at 8:55 am.  Mr. Boyd and Ms. Diez will be dismissing their classes at the front of the school and Ms. Dew will be using the door closest to her class Door 1C. Ms. Roknic’s class will be using Door 2 for dismissal on the south side of the school.

We have placed our K classes in the following rooms in order to be prepared to receive and welcome your children in anticipation of our new wing:

Our Parent Council is inviting all of our families out to a Welcome Back Meet and Greet with coffee and cookies on Friday September 6th from 8:30am to 9:30am in the school yard.

The Countdown Is On!

Summer 2013 is in the homestretch! A new school year at Earl Haig begins on September 3rd. Watch this space for news from your School Council as we gear up for yet another exciting year.

Parent Council Meeting — tomorrow at 7 pm

The final meeting of the Earl Haig Parent Council for the 2012-2013 school year takes place tomorrow in the library on the second floor at 7 pm. All are welcome. Childcare is available in room 1.

Construction Update- Week of June 17th

Please see below for an important message from Ms. Ellis regarding the Kindergarten Extension and the roof construction that is slated to begin this week.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

RE: Roofing Project Advisement

The roof on our new kindergarten addition is ready to be added. Construction is scheduled to begin mid-week of the 17th of June and be completed the end of the same week, weather permitting.

The roofing project needs to be undertaken during daylight hours in relatively good weather in order to ensure both worker safety and proper roof application.

As noted above, commencement of work may be impacted by weather conditions. Once the project commences, every daylight work hour will be utilized until the completion of the project.

The roofing process may produce uncomfortable asphalt odours, which may enter the building. Wind direction, humidity, shape and setting of the school create difficulties in predicting the extent of fume penetration into the building.

If your child is known to be allergic, asthmatic or sensitive to asphalt fumes, please notify your school Principal.

Next School Council meeting is June 18th!

Please join us Tuesday June 18th at 7:00 pm in the library for the last School Council meeting of the year. All are welcome to attend. Childcare is provided in room 1 on the main floor.

We’ll also be sharing some snacks and refreshments afterward, so bring your favourite appetizer to add to the fun.  See you there!

Amazing Community Event

The Earl Haig Community Festival was a HUGE success.  20+ cakes won at the cake walk, glitter tattoos, old school games and a talent show that not only showcased our Earl Haig talent, but allowed us to use our fancy new audio gear purchased with the funds from the school council.  Goodbye static and hello Carley Rae Jepson!

Thanks to everyone for volunteering.  Up next?  Our next batch of grade 8s graduate and our new kindergarten students get to meet their teachers!
